Facebook is an American online social media and social networking site established in Menlo Park, California. It is the flagship service of the company of the same name, Facebook, Inc. It was established by Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes, all Harvard College classmates and roommates.

Facebook’s founders initially restricted membership to Harvard undergraduates. Columbia, Stanford, and Yale were the first to join, followed by the rest of the Ivy League, MIT, NYU, Boston University, numerous other colleges in the US and Canada, and finally high school students.

Anyone who claims to be at least 13 years old has been allowed to become a registered user of the app since 2006, while local laws may differ. The name is derived from the Facebook directories that are frequently distributed to American university students.
