Clubhouse, after a year of exclusivity on iOS, has announced plans to make the voice-chat app available on Android smartphones. The audio-only app is now available on the Google play store in the United States and other regions around the world.
“Our plan over the next few weeks is to collect feedback from the community, fix any issues we see, and work to add a few features like payment and club creations before rolling it out more broadly,” the company said in a statement.
Despite being an “invite-only” app, Clubhouse has seen major highs over the year as several celebrities like Kelvin Hart, Drake, and Opera Winfrey hosted events on the platform. The biggest event, which saw a hike in downloads in February 2021, was when Tesla CEO Elon Musk joined Vlad Tenev on the Good Time Show to discuss Tesla and Space X.
The company says the app is now available on Android smartphones as tests on the beta mode is completed in the United States.
However, in a bid to control growth on the platform, the company says the app will still be using the “waitlist and invite system”, which means not anyone can join, but will rather require an invite from users with an account first.
With the Android version rolled out, the company believes Android will be the last piece to success.
“With Android, we believe that clubhouse will feel more complete. We’re also grateful to all of the Android users out there for their patience. Whether you are a creator, a club organizer, or someone who just wants to explore, we are so excited to welcome you to the community,” they further stated.
